Calcein rings around an osteon

This image demonstrates an osteon infilling with new bone matrix. The green rings are calcein, a fluorescent dye that binds to actively mineralising tissues. The time between the two sets of calcein rings was 3 weeks: from this and a measured distance we can calculate the rate of mineral advancement, the linear accretion rate.
