As part of the MUGES project, bone slices were collected from a standardised region of MC III. They were then imaged using standard epifluorescent and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Data indicate a clear change in numbers of active osteons in bones from exercised horses compared to non-exercised horses. Image analysis was used to quantitatively determine the activities of individual osteons. Periosteal and endosteal (re)modelling activities were investigated using the same methods. Results have been published in the New Zealand Veterinary Journal.
