The dorsal third metacarpus (Mc3) of the Thoroughbred racehorse commonly suffers from pain and fatigue fracture associated with the onset of fast work, a condition known as sore shins. This image shows extremely high modelling activity in periosteum taken from dorsal Mc3 of a horse that had recently been in fast work. The bright green lines are calcein fluorescence, indicating sites of mineral apposition. Three weeks elapsed between the first and second calcein labels visible in this image.
